Step 1: Collection of video data
With a video cassette recorder or with a camera and a PC an event has to be recorded and saved analog [with a video terminal] or digital [on the hard disk]. (A digital video can be stored in the MPEG format to save space on the hard disk. This allows the assembly of a big video database).
The user is able to view and analyse the video directly on the computer. In the digital version an analysed action is always connected to the appropriate position in the video. Therefore all entries of the database can be accessed by mouse clicks and the user gets to view the matching parts of the video.
By the way:
In the notational system Simi Scout it is possible to work with up to ten video views, to get a detailed overview of the observed area (e.g. a sports field). This leads to more exact results in analysis!
Step 2: Define attributes
The criteria (attributes) for evaluating actions in the video, can be defined all the time. Actions can be gripped by mouse clicks or keyboard shortcuts.
Step 3: Saving in a database
All the acquired actions are inserted in the Simi Scout database and connected with the specified attributes. In addition to that the user has the possibility to store several recordings in a database. With this feature one can compare different people, different situations and different observation areas.
