What is Simi Motion® ?

Simi Motion provides an extensive platform for motion capture and 2D/3D movement analysis. Simi Motion can be tailored to the needs of the specific user. A range of configurations are possible to suit customers who would prefer to conduct quick and simple analyses as well as for those of a more scientific background, wishing to solve complex problems.

What makes Simi Motion® unique?

In comparison to the majority of products available on the market, Simi Motion uses no infrared technology but utilizes image based techniques. High quality video recordings with high frame rates and high resolutions are captured and saved using synchronized industrial cameras. Using the latest algorithms of image processing, Simi Motion can capture motion in detail and calculate 2D/3D data. As with the other systems, Simi Motion has marker based automatic tracking to calculate marker positions. It is however also possible to track using markerless methods, such as pattern matching or silhouette tracking using no markers. The years of research and development which Simi has invested in this area have enabled research, for which infrared systems simply do not suffice.


The operator of Simi Motion is able to use affordable industrial cameras. With Simi Software you receive the best data quality and operation speeds available. Image based technology is the future of movement analysis and Simi is the market leader in this area.

In which variations can I buy Simi Motion® ?

Simi Motion has a highly modular format, meaning that the software and system can be adapted to suit your needs, whether they be for a simpler system which provides rapid analysis, or for something more complex to give findings greater scientific meaning.

The three main variations of this product are:

  • 2D Systems (simple use and quick results, 2D measurements)
  • Simple 3D Systems (simple 3D configurations in the middle price range. High data quality for simple problems)
  • Complex 3D Systems (for the most scientific requirements and complex measurements)


What is the operational procedure of Simi Motion® ?

Simi Motion offers the complete range of recording, processing, editing and analysis of data. The individual steps comprise of …

  1. Movement recordings with synchronised cameras, in addition to the logging of data from supplementary measuring devices such as EMG, force plates and others (if available)
  2. 2D or 3D movement data capture through the tracking of joint centres, with or without the use of markers.
  3. Movement data calculations (position, path, velocity, acceleration etc.)
  4. Movement and sensory data processing for the individual calculation of analysis parameters and evaluation
  5. Data analysis and reporting
  6. Data exportation into further programmes when necessary

What results do I get from Simi Motion® ?

Scientifically precise movement data for kinematics, kinetics, EMG and pressure (position, speeds, accelerations, angles, distances, etc) with synchronised data from additional measurement devices such as EMG measurements or force plates. This data can be processed further to obtain additional analysis parameters (further angles, mathematical calculations, filtered and rectified EMG data, phases, events, etc) according to requirements.


All results and calculations can be displayed in standard reports or in individual report drafts, but can also be stored in ASCII, C3D and other formats, to allow straight forward transportation into other programmes. For 3D animations, it is also possible to export files in certain 3D formats such as bvh, maya, lws and Filmbox.

In order to be able to use this product, in most cases, extensive system solutions are necessary, which we readily provide. Our system integration guarantees a fully functioning system, into which many years of company research has been incorporated.


Simi supports a wide range of camera models and recording systems available on the market.


The functionality of webcams and similar low-end cameras for unsophisticated and simple applications is generally a given, but something which we are not able to guarantee. Consumer cameras are supported by our systems when they contain DV-Outlets but synchronisation is not possible.


Professional industrial cameras are not directly supplied by us, but a selection of certain camera types and brands are fully functional with our software. The following makes can be fully integrated:

- Allied Vision Technologies (AVT) (1394a/b, GigE)
- Basler (1394a/b, GigE, Camera Link)
- Mikrotron (Camera Link)
- SVS Vistek (GigE)
- The Imaging Source (TIS) (1394a)
- Baumer (GigE/Camera Link)

Through communication standards other makes are also supported (FireWire: DCAM, GigE: GigE Vision, alle: GenICam), but require pre-arrangement with us on an individual basis.

Recording System

With Simi Motion systems it is possible to configure an entirely individual operating system according to your needs. We do however, needless to say, offer a standard package, which offers the best conditions for the most common applications. Typical operating systems are:

Typically systems will run with up to 8 cameras. Due to the open design of each Simi product, individual systems can be upgraded according to your needs.


Video Data Format

With Simi a whole range of video types can be used, if supported by Simi. Even if they had not been recorded with Simi recording systems. The video format is essential for the quality and application range of analysis.


Uncompressed, digital video data is the standard output of industrial cameras and is directly supported by Simi Motion. Colour cameras deliver uncompressed video data with coded colour information (Bayer), which can be decoded by our software into video playback format.


DV (Digital Video) as well as MiniDV are the norm with camcorders and are directly supported, M-JPEG with 3.5 MB/s (PAL 720x576@25, NTSC 640x480@29.97)


HDV, AVCHD, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, WMV, HDCAM, XDCAM, DVCAM, MPEG IMX, Digital Betacam and other modern, highly compressed digital formats have up until now not been supported. The playback of recorded video data on the PC is possible after the installation of video decoder software (Codec). We’re however not able to guarantee specifics such as precise frame control, correct input signal and correct representation of aspect ratios for these.

In Simi Motion, it is possible to integrate a multitude of different data measurements which are key in movement analyses. The following equipment and brands are compatible with Simi Motion.


Analogue Equipment

Simi Motion can record any analogue signal through a suitable A/D Adapter in synchronisation with movement data from the video.


Digital Equipment

Equipment which produces digital signals can in general not be recorded directly by Simi Motion. The majority of equipment can however be synchronised with a hardware trigger, and the data can then be imported into Simi Motion. Digital equipment can be bound via your SDKs directly with Simi Motion, but success can vary with each individual case.

Both digital and analogue equipment is available for EMG measurement. The recommendations above apply to the two different signal types. Brands which have been frequently used and well integrated include Noraxon, Mega Electronic, BioVision, Delsys and Myon.

Force Plates

Force plates provide analogue signals in most cases, and can therefore be directly recorded using Simi Motion. Typical brands are Kistler, AMTI oder Bertec.

Foot Pressure Equipment

Foot pressure measuring equipment can be synchronised and then displayed in Simi Motion via the use of a hardware trigger. Equipment produced by Novel, Medilogic, RSScan, Tekscan, Parotec and Zebris have been integrated with our software in the past.



Even EEGs can be integrated and reported with Simi Motion. We have previous experience integrating equipment from Brain Products.
